The President is the highest civil figure in Alderney and is appointed by the electorate of Alderney for a four-year term. It is a non-political position.
The President of Alderney ranks after a member of the Royal Family (or a person directly representing the Sovereign), His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor (or a person directly representing him) and the Bailiff of Guernsey.
The President acts  in a similar way to the Speaker of the UK House of Commons and chairs States Meetings to ensure correct constitutional procedures are followed.
It is the job of the President to help the political process run smoothly.
The President represents the island on diplomatic matters and meeting visiting dignitaries. 
The President holds the right to vote in the States of Alderney; but only to make the deciding vote in the event of a tied vote.
There is no constitutional limit to the number of terms a President may serve.
